Our History
Lights Back On was established as a human services nonprofit organization in 2019 and we gained 501(c)(3) tax-exemption status through the IRS in 2020.
Lights Back On came about due to the Georgia Winter Storm back in October of 2013. We had just brought our first child home in June of 2013 four months prior to the storm hitting. We lived in a one-bedroom apartment and could not afford the electricity bill. During the cold, we had a heater that we kept in one room to stay warm. If one of us had to leave out of the room, we turned the heater out that way so it would be warm for us to use a hot plate, go to the restroom, or watch television. For a year, we went without heat or hot water. My wife and I have also endured homelessness as individuals prior to our meeting or getting married. God's grace is what brought us through, brought us together, brought us our baby girl, and brought us here now to help you.
We here at Lights Back On understand the fight of being homeless or having to choose between a hot meal or paying your bills. Our outlook on helping vulnerable populations is different because we do not just talk about it, but have gone through the trials you may be facing. Poverty has no friends and we want to help prevent others from having to go through the same struggles we had to go through during that time and God is blessing us to bless you.
Funding for our services and operations is derived from individual donations and major gifts, corporate donations, fees for goods and services, loans, foundation grants, and government grants and contracts. Lights Back on have initiatives focused on providing energy bill payment assistance, water utility payment assistance, temporary housing services, food services, and educational services.
Lights Back On has 501(c)3 tax-exemption status from the IRS. Lights Back On customer service center is virtual and we service Gwinnett, Dekalb, Fulton, and Cobb counties within the state of Georgia.
